An Oasis In Your Garden - Building A Garden Pond

Although building a pond may be daunting at first, the pond itself can add wonder and beauty to any garden. There are however a few steps to take before you even think about adding water to a hole. This guide will help walk you through the process.

  • Planning - With any garden project that you embark on, the most important factor is to have a solid plan. Is your garden large enough? Where would you like to have your pond? Is it a suitable area? These are all important questions you need to ask yourself before you consider digging. It would also be a good idea to choose an area that is slightly elevated as you wouldn't want your pond to overflow in heavy rainfall.

  • Layout - The best way I have to start with the pond layout is to use a garden hose to 'draw' out your pond width and length. Make any further adjustments accordingly. Remember to consider depth especially if you are planning on adding fish; at least 2ft deep with normal fish and at least 3ft deep for larger fish, such as Koi. You can always use chalk to outline the shape of your hosepipe, just so you have a reference for when you start digging.

  • Pond Interior - You can finally start digging! Instead of making the base of your pond one level you could have different depths. This will then allow you to have a variety of different plants. Before you start filling your hole with water, you will have to ensure that you have a good pond liner. These can probably be bought from your local gardening centre, but there are also plenty to choose from online, which may offer a wider range. Once your pond liner is in place within your pond, you can set it down with stones so the liner doesn't move once filled with water.

  • Planting - Before you fill your pond with water, it is a good idea to start arranging your plants around your pond. Make sure that the plants don't tip over once you start filling the pond with water. You can also start to prepare your aquatic plants.

  • Watering - Although it may be easy to fill your pond as quickly as you can, it is advised to water slowly as you will be able to check for leaks or movement from your liner more easily. This might take longer than you think and you may wish to add any pumps or filters that you have whilst your pond slowly fills up. After you've filled your pond, make any necessary changes.

  • Adding Fish - You do not have to add fish. However, I personally believe that fish add a certain beauty to a garden pond.

Once you have your end result, prepare to enjoy endless summer days in your back garden admiring the beauty you helped to create.
