Butlin's first holiday camp opened in Skegness on 11th April of 1936, and was the first venture by South African born Billy Butlin in the new, unfamiliar waters of British holiday camps. Construction on the camp started in September 1935. The camp was taken over by the Royal Navy during the war in 1939.

Butlins first camp was the Skegness site open 1936 and is still open. Some of the camps were used as training camps in WW2. Founded by Sir Billy Butlin.
