The basic idea of computing developed in the 1200's when a Moslem cleric proposed solving problems with a series of written procedures. Blaise Pascal invented the first commercial hand powered adding calculator. The first multiplying calculator appeared in the 1670s in Germany before the American Revolution. John Vincent Atanasoff designed a digital computer in 1936 in the basement of the Physics building on the campus of Iowa State.
