How Do I Replace A Track Rod End?

Answer

A track rod end is replaced by having basic tools such as a jack, axle stands, spanners 22mm and socket set 18mm. The procedure is very simple and it begins with jacking up the front of the car and placing it on axle stands. The next procedure is to remove the road wheel and slacken the locknut on the track rod end using a 22mm spanner. Then, detach the track rod end from the swivel hub by undoing the nut with an 18mm spanner or socket until it is flush with the end of the thread and separate it using a ball-joint splitter. You can apply dismantling lubricant if the track rod end is tight on the threads of the track rod. Unscrew the track rod end from the track rod making a note of the number of turns. Next, fit the new track rod end by screwing it onto the track rod by the same number of turns as were necessary to remove the old one, and then tighten the locknut. Finally, fit the new track rod end to the hub using an 18mm socket and refit the road wheel. Lower the car and have the wheel alignment checked, and adjusted if necessary.

Jack up the vehicle using the jack and place it on jack stands, remove the bolt that holds the rod end in place. Drop the rod end out of the mount. Place a wrench on the jam nut that locks the rod end in place and twist the rod end out of the link. Loosen the jam nut off the old rod end and place it on the new rod end. Screw the new rod end into the original link. For good alignment, make sure it's screwed it in as tightly as the original rod end. Place the rod end into the original mount , bolt it in place and tighten the jam nut onto the linkage with a wrench. Once everything is tightened up, lower the vehicle off the jack stands with the jack.
