How Do Taps Work?


A tap is composed of a screw with a rubber at the bottom end. The part turned is the top end of the screw which goes down into the casing of the tap. When turned on, the screw raises, lifting the rubber and allowing water to gush up and when turned off, the screw goes down and the rubber presses down onto the end of the water pipe and cuts off the flow of water.

Traditionally, the lever was a disk or a spoked wheel that could be turned to achieve the desired flow.
