A reciprocating compressor works by the use of the reciprocating action of the piston that is inside a cylinder to compress refrigerant, the piston moves downward, and a vacuum is created inside the cylinder this is because of the pressure above the intake valve is greater than the pressure below it, then the intake valve is forced to open and refrigerant is sucked into the cylinder.
