How many in a legion?

Answer

A legion was made up of 6,000 men. All legions consisted of exactly 5,300 fighting men including officers. It is difficult to determine whether field surgeons and clerks were included in the 6,000 or 5,300. The legatus legionis was the legionary commander. This post was appointed by the emperor and held command for 3 or 4 years.
