How Many People Die from Dysentery?

Answer

Roughly 600,000 people die of dysentery annually, while 140 million people will develop dysentery every year. Most of the deaths are in children under the age of five, and in developing countries. In the United States, only roughly 30,000 cases are reported each year. Dysentery is the inflammation of the intestine and is caused by blockage of feces. It is spread through contamination of food and water, and in developing countries it usually causes epidemics. The longest epidemic was in 1968 when it lasted for four years in Central America.
