How to make a cajon?

Answer

To make a Cajon, you need the following tools and equipment: 12 mm or 1/2 inch plywood, 3 mm or 1/8 inch plywood, jig saw, clamps and/or luggage straps, wood glue, 3 by 20 mm or 3.5 by 20 mm screws, power drill, wood rasp and sanding paper. Use the 3 mm or 1/8 inch plywood for the taper or striking face size 320 mm by 484 mm and use 12 mm or 1/2 inch plywood for the top and bottom, size 320 mm by 320 mm or 13 inch by 13 inch. Then the rear, size 320 mm by 460 mm or 13 inch by 18 inch and sides, size 308 mm by 460 mm or 12 1/2 inch by 18 inch. Cut out the required sheets of plywood and ensure the cuts are very straight then clamp a ruler to the sheet using a jig saw or circular saw. Drill a hole near the edge of the marked sound hole, and use it as a starting point to cut out the sound hole using a jig saw. Round the edges to facilitate airflow and make sure the hole is 12 centimetres in diameter. Lay out the sheets in the way you want to join them, and prepare a way to put the Cajon under tension using big clamps, but luggage straps will also do. Apply plenty of wood glue at the top, bottom, rear and sides together and then align them to the best of your capability. Apply tension for a sufficient amount of time depending on the instructions. Wipe off any excess glue using a wet cloth. Clamp or strap the taper to the box and align it as you mark the screw locations and then drill holes 1 mm smaller than those screws. Take off the taper and widen the holes in it to the screw size, using a drill of the same screw size. Use a countersink cutter to give room for the screw heads then put the taper back on and then screw it in place. Hand-tighten the screws, it is easy to rip through the thin plywood with power tools. Take a deep breath and hit it for the first time then cut out feet from leftover pieces of wood and then screw them to the bottom; rubber or cork can also be used. Round the top side corners using a wood rasp to make it more comfortable to sit on and then sand the Cajon using progressively finer sanding paper, as you finish to your preference.
