What are the different kinds of listening?


The five different types of listening are informative, relationship, appreciative, critical and discriminative, states Air University, which provides U.S. Air Force education at Maxwell Air Force Base. The purpose of these listening types is to make communication more effective.

Informative listening occurs when a listener's priority is to understand a message. Relationship listening is necessary when a listener wants to improve a relationship between individuals. Appreciative listening occurs when an individual wants to enjoy a listening experience. Critical listening is necessary so that an individual may analyze what he hears. Finally, discriminative listening occurs when a listener pays attention to a speaker's voice and distinguishes between what is said and what the speaker means.
