The elements of a legend are easy to recognize. A legend must have some sort of truth to support it, even if the truth is exaggerated. A legend generally takes place during a specific time period and within a certain culture. They feature a hero of some sort along with possible supernatural elements. Finally, creative elements must be used in a legend. The imagination of the writer must be implemented to create action in the story.
