What Do Hoverflies Eat?

Adult hoverflies feed mainly on nectar and pollen, beside nectar, Hover Flies feed on honey dew produced by aphids as well. Hover Flies are one of the few kinds of insects that can digest pollen, which is protein rich development of the eggs. The yellow patternation can reflect the amount and type of pollen the insects have eaten, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams.
