A duchy is a territory of a kingdom that is headed by a duchess or duke. In British culture, a duke or duchess is the highest ranking nobleman below the king or queen. Examples of duchies are Duchy of Schleswig in Denmark, Duchy of Cornwall and Duchy of Lancaster in England and Duchies of Burgundy, Normandy and Orlans in France.

Duchy is a well-managed private estate in Wales, which funds the public, charitable and private activities of The Prince of Wales and his family. Created in 1337, the duchy estate's primary function was to provide an income for the heir to the throne. This, at least, is the story 'the duchy' maintains today.
