Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease whereby the patient's own thyroid gland is attacked by his or her own immune system causing it to produce too much thyroxin. Thyroxin (T4) is a hormone that is produced by the thyroid gland which has four iodine molecules that are attached to its molecular structure. This disease is characterised by hyperthyroidism as a result of circulating auto antibodies.
