What was life like for people on a pilgrimage?

Answer

Being a pilgrim in early days was perilous living. The weather conditions were not always so forgiving with the elements battering the pilgrims and there was always the threat of outlaws attacking pilgrim convoys. The latter was the more dangerous of the two and resulted in the pilgrims travelling in huge convoys and re-affirming the age old thought of safety in numbers.
1 Additional Answer
Long distance travelling in general was quite a dangerous activity, since cases of people being robbed along the highways were high. The pilgrims would travel in groups to enhance security. People on a pilgrimage would usually only carry what they needed, and would share with those who had little to eat.
