What Was National Service?

Answer

National service was a mandatory government service programme established on the outbreak of the Second World War. Anyone above the age of 18 was forced to join it and therefore there was a reduced level of voluntary recruitment to the regular army. It began with registration at the local branch of the Ministry of Labour and National Service.
