Young cicadas live in the ground while adult ones live on trees. These are large stout insects, which are also characterised by round bulging eyes and short, bristly antennae. There are about 2000 species of this insect which are found all over the world with the exception of the Antarctica.

There probably are because they are very abundant in Australia, which also has a semi-desert climate. Cicadas are found all over the world and seem to prefer warmer temperatures.
