Several researchers have been involved in the study of the span of short term memory. Key among them is psychologist George Miller who said that the short term memory can take up to seven items (plus or minus two). He called the span 'magical number seven'. Other researchers who have also studied short term memory include Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch who developed Baddeley's model of working memory.

The person who studied the span of short term memory was Richard Shiffrin. He contributed the idea of division of memory and developed a model in the 1960s. He extended the model with the retrieving effectively from memory model in 1997 with Mark Steyvers.
