Phillip II of Spain planned to invade England, overthrow Elizabeth's protestant regime. The Spanish Armada set out in 1588 supported by Pope Sixtus V who treated the invasion as a crusade. A zealous Catholic, Phillip planned to reclaim the lands stolen by Henry VIII, reopen monasteries and restore the Catholic forms of worship.
