Why is SAN Francisco Bay at Risk of Earthquakes?

Answer

San Francisco Bay is at risk of earthquakes because of its location, which is near a lake (San Andreas Lake), a spring and a mountain (Black Mountain). The strain energy produced by the northwestward motion of the Pacific Plate causes the destructive earthquakes. E.g. in 1906 there was an earthquake that saw the San Andrea fault move 21 feet horizontally.
