Why is the stevenson screen painted white?

The term Stevenson screen is an old word for a pleated wood enclosure that held weather instruments and it is painted white in the enclosures to decrease the effects of heating that are caused by solar radiation and also the pleats allowed the wind to flow through the enclosures and maintain close to ambient conditions.
