Why should slavery be abolished?

Slavery should be abolished on a worldwide basis, because it is an institution which relies on a belief that humans are not equal and that some humans are more intrinsically worthwhile than others. Most civilizations today acknowledge that slavery is a monstrous evil and have enacted legislation to make it illegal. Slavery is considered an international crime and a crime against humanity.

Anyone who believes, as is stated in the U.S. Declaration of Independence, that all men are created equal cannot with a clear conscience support the institution of slavery, since it is based on the presupposition that some people are inherently inferior to others. Slavery is horribly damaging to those who are enslaved, typically depriving them of basic liberties. Slaves are often mistreated physically, sexually and financially. The institution of slavery also damages the economies and infrastructure of the nations that practice it because of the violence and corruption involved in the slave trade. Slavery is seen as morally wrong by most religions and philosophies, and it is condemned as such in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Because of these clear statements, no nation is able to deny their culpability if they practice or condone slavery.
